Training the mind?

The other day someone said, ‘thought are thoughts, we have no control over them. They just come.’ This set me thinking. Do thoughts have an independent entity which is bigger than me? Are my thoughts more powerful to rule my intellect?

What then are thoughts?

I see a lovely sunrise and I comment…thoughts are initiated. But what if I watch the sunrise and do not comment apart from watching the beauty of nature? Silence has no thoughts.

In the interaction with the world, millions of thoughts are created….entertained and forgotten in a day. This is where I found the need to train our thoughts. They say ‘thoughts are powerful.’ But where are the powers when the thoughts are scattered? Just as the powerful lens can burn a piece of paper by concentrating the sunlight, so also the mind power if concentrated can yield wonderful results. No wonder the first instructions given by a Guru to a disciple is ‘observe your thoughts’ and ‘be silent’. In verbal silence mind is super active….observe the various expressions of people even when silent…it reveals the chattering of the mind. I observe myself on the seat of mediation …how much it chatters …endless.  It is when the mind is trained to keep silent and observe itself, the mind silences and thoughts get channelized over a period of time.

In the heart that Lord exists, if the seat is polluted with the thoughts of varied nature….how impure would that seat be? How will my Love…my Lord be comfortable there?

  1. am compelled to share that sloka
in Gita, wherein Bhagvan Krishna tells:

    Chapter 6 TEXT 25

    sanaih sanair uparamed
    buddhya dhrti-grhitaya
    atma-samstham manah krtva
    na kincid api cintayet

    SYNONYMS

    sanaih–gradually; sanaih–step by step; uparamet–hesitated; buddhya–by intelligence; dhrti-grhitaya–carrying the conviction; atma-samstham–placed in transcendence; manah–mind; krtva–doing so; na–not; kincit–anything else; api–even; cintayet–be thinking of.
    TRANSLATION

Gradually, step by step, with full conviction, one should become situated in trance by means of intelligence, and thus the mind should be fixed on the Self alone and should think of nothing else.

and in the next verse He also REVEALS:

    EXT 26

    yato yato niscalati
    manas cancalam asthiram
    tatas tato niyamyaitad
    atmany eva vasam nayet

    SYNONYMS

    yatah–whatever; yatah–wherever; niscalati–verily agitated; manah–the mind; cancalam–flickering; asthiram–unsteady; tatah–from there; tatah–and thereafter; niyamya–regulating; etat–this; atmani–in the self; eva–certainly; vasam–control; nayet–must bring in.
    TRANSLATION

From whatever and wherever the mind wanders due to its flickering and unsteady nature, one must certainly withdraw it and bring it back under the control of the Self.

  3. lovely comments Shree… yes the training of the mind not to indulge in the world beyond what is required is so essential. As a pre requisite to that, silence of the tongue is also a consideration……. what say ?

    1. Tongue is only a sense organ
and into action only in verbal expressions

Another verse which has had immense
and profound impact onto my entire
      existence fro Gita is:

      Chapter 5. Karma-yoga, Verse 23

      saknotihaiva yah sodhum
      prak sarira-vimoksanat
      kama-krodhodbhavam vegam
      sa yuktah sa sukhi narah

      SYNONYMS

      TRANSLATION

Before giving up this present body, if one is able to tolerate the urges of the material senses and check the force of desire and anger, he is a yogi and is happy in this world.

shree: i wld also include along with
      KAMA & KHRODHA…. BHAYA also,
as Fear is something inherent WITHIN
each of us – that sets one on a course
of Delusions and passivity at multi dimensions….

  4. Swami Akhandanandji Maharaj of Vrindavan says ….to get over anger, or to check one’s senses…offer them to the lord in devotion. align oneself in Him so much that nothing is apart from Him.
Any kind of association…..that leads an impression in the mind ….will cause movement. Love someone special and her/ his thoughts will be special….hate and that will be special too. Anger ….is a result of lack of peace ….
Why not work on that aspect ????

      Sri Ramskrishna Paramahamsa stories mention:

When Lord Krishna was angry with the seven headed
snake – Kalia, the prompt response was:

“Lord you have gifted me with ONLY POISON and
there is NOTHING ELSE that i may offer to you…….
Please accept the same and LIBERATE me….! “
